Gaming laptop quiz - find the best laptop for you

Gaming laptop quiz

The increased power of gaming laptop has sky-rocketed the last few years. Nowadays, you’ll find laptops with unbelievable gaming performance, even some that can rival desktop computers in terms of specifications.

One drawback that gaming laptops have had previously was the screens. When you’re playing a game where you have to react quickly and be precise with your mouse movement, a monitor with a high refresh rate like 120Hz or higher is noticeably better. Laptops used to be limited at 60Hz like most casual monitors. However, gaming laptops with 120Hz and even up to 300Hz have been coming out on the market.

We’ve collected the best gaming laptops on Amazon we could find and you can go to the top of the page to find which gaming laptop on Amazon is best suited for your budget and needs.

If you’re not into gaming and would rather want a regular laptop then head over to find the best laptop under $700.

At first you need to consider how much money you’re willing to spend on a new laptop. If it will be your main PC for gaming, you’ll probably want to put some extra money in it.

You can easily find a very decent laptop for around $1,500.

If you want to go for the top-of-the-line laptop, you’ll have to add another $1,000 to really get a decent one that can run games on a higher graphic setting.

However, you don’t need to spend quite that much for the convenience of portable gaming. If you’re really running on a shoe-string budget, you can find a few for around $800 – $900. But don’t expect a beast of a computer. If you’re more into casual games which don’t require the best hardware to run, then this price-range is good enough. The longevity of the laptop might be a bit shorter however.

Which type of games do you play?

This is probably the biggest factor in choosing a gaming laptop from Amazon. Many people have a certain genre of games they play. You might be one of those people.

League of Legends, Dota 2 etc. won’t require a high-end PC to run smoothly but you would still want a somewhat decent machine.

If First person shooter games are your main game, you need to focus on a laptop that has a high refresh rate. Typically a 144Hz screen would give you a much smoother experience.

Are you into VR games, then you would need a really powerful computer and also one which is VR ready. Focus more on the graphic card and processor to make sure you get a pleasant VR experience.

Screen size and weight

Consider portability and weight if you’re the type who want a gaming laptop which you can easily bring with you when you’re travelling or you also want to bring it with you to school.

Most laptops have a screen size of 15.6 inches, which is a good middle ground. You’re generally sitting pretty close to the screen anyway.

You can choose to go up a notch to 17 inches which some people find more pleasing. But remember, the bigger the screen, the heavier it will be. And the weight will actually increase more than you expect.

Take the MSI Leopard series for example. The 15.6 inches version weigh in at around 5.14 pounds and the 17.3-inch version weigh almost 10 pounds. That’s twice the weight!

This probably won’t bother you as much if you only plan to keep it at home and use it as stationary PC and just sometimes bring it with you somewhere. Are you someone who often like to put the laptop in your bag and go somewhere, then the answer to which one to choose is quite simple.

Gamers are pretty tech-savy and would know which hardware is good enough for them. But let’s take a look at what you’ll find in a typical gaming laptop on Amazon today.

9th or 10th generation of Intel CPU. AMD CPUs are not that common in gaming laptops, but you’ll find them in ASUS laptops.

Most common amount of RAM you’ll find is 8GB, however if your budget is mid-high to high, then you’ll be able to increase that amount to 16Gb or even 32GB.

GPUs matter as much as other components to get a high frame rate in games. In most cases you’ll find a Nvidia GPU and rarely you’ll find an AMD graphics card. Are you going for a 4K model, then you’ll need a better GPU.

Storage – SSD or HDD?

Now, storage on a laptop is important, especially if you have a lot of games you play regularly. You would never want to lunch games from an external harddrive. External HDDs are significantly more slower than internal ones.

Pretty much all gaming laptops these days have two ways of storing data; one SSD, and one HDD. Ideally you would run your operating system from an SSD to make bootup faster. You would probably want to run a few games you often play from that SSD also. That means a 128GB SSD might be too small for you.

If you’re on a large budget, then a 1TB SSD might be the best way to go.

With all laptops you’ll usually also get a 1TB HDD or more with an SSD so you should’t be too worried about running out of internal storage space.

Budget decides everything. You will get what you pay for, which means a more expensive laptop will give you higher performance and a longer life-span.

However, you don’t need to shell out as much as $3,000 for a gaming laptop on Amazon. Depending on your gaming habits and the type of games you play, you might be better off saving a few bucks and go for a cheaper one.
